Chapter 9 - The Moretti War

People imagine mafia wars begin with gunfire.
This one began with canceled meetings.
Bank accounts frozen.
Dock workers refusing instructions.
Executives taking unexpected vacations.
Men who had spent twenty years calling Alessandro “Don” suddenly becoming unreachable.
Caterina and Bianca did not need an army.
They needed uncertainty.
Rumors spread.
Alessandro poisoned his own fiancée.
Alessandro fabricated evidence against his aunt.
Sofia intended to seize the company.
Federal investigators were preparing racketeering arrests.
Marco was secretly cooperating.
By the fourth day, three shipping contracts collapsed.
By the fifth, a Moretti captain named Enzo Carbone disappeared.
By the sixth, someone fired through the windows of one of Alessandro’s warehouses.
No one was hurt.
Message.
Alessandro responded differently than everyone expected.
He closed the warehouse.
Then he called a meeting.
Not with soldiers.
With lawyers.
Accountants.
Federal prosecutors.
I stared at him.
“You’re cooperating.”
“On this.”
“Only this?”
He looked at me.
“You want everything.”
“I want to know what life I’m agreeing to if I stay with you.”
That conversation had been waiting for us since before the poisoning.
Perhaps since our first date.
“I am not innocent.”
“I know.”
“I’ve ordered things I cannot explain away.”
“I know.”
“I have profited from people being afraid.”
“I know.”
His jaw tightened.
“Then why are you here?”
Because love is complicated.
Because leaving is sometimes easier than staying.
Because staying without truth is cowardice.
“I don’t know yet.”
That answer hurt him.
Good.
He needed truth too.
Alessandro looked out the window.
“My father built an empire around fear.”
“My mother tried to turn parts of it legitimate.”
“Vittorio made sure the illegal side remained profitable.”
“And you?”
“I told myself I was modernizing.”
“But?”
“I kept the same weapons.”
Not literal.
Power.
Threats.
Silence.
“I don’t want Emma growing up thinking you saved her and therefore everything you do is good.”
His eyes moved to me.
“I don’t either.”
“I don’t want our children someday learning morality depends on our last name.”
His face changed at the word children.
I continued.
“If there is an us after this, something changes.”
“What?”
“You stop calling fear loyalty.”
Silence.
That was not a small request.
It was the foundation of his world.
“I can dismantle the criminal crews.”
“Can you?”
“Yes.”
“Without a war?”
“No.”
“That matters.”
“I know.”
“Then find another way.”
He almost laughed.
“You make organized crime sound like a company restructuring.”
“You have accountants.”
“Use them.”
He stared at me.
Then smiled for the first time in days.
“Terrifying woman.”
“You almost fed me poison.”
“You will use that forever.”
“Yes.”
Fair.
His cooperation with prosecutors focused on Isabella’s murder, attempted murder, corruption, and the Rinaldi network.
But information bled.
One crime touches another.
Alessandro knew that.
He made a choice.
He opened older books.
Not all.
Enough.
Men were arrested.
Others fled.
Some legal businesses separated from criminal holdings.
The Moretti empire began changing before Caterina could seize it.
That made her more dangerous.
Then Emma remembered one final detail.
I was visiting Lucia when Emma drew the woman in red again.
Same wig.
Same dress.
Same tattoo.
But this time she added a necklace.
A tiny silver bird.
“Where did you see that?”
I asked.
“Lady had it.”
“Bianca?”
Emma shrugged.
I showed her photographs.
Bianca wore diamonds.
Pearls.
Gold.
Never a bird.
Then Marco found an old image from Isabella’s funeral.
Rachel stood in the background.
No bird.
Caterina.
None.
Sofia.
None.
Then a photograph of one of Bianca’s employees.
Costume assistant.
Name:
Mara Vescari.
Silver bird necklace.
My heart jumped.
Vescari.
Same surname as the Palermo dealer who sold me the musical score.
“Related?”
Marco checked.
“Daughter.”
The poisoner may not have been Bianca at all.
Mara had access to wigs.
Clothing.
Bianca’s studio.
She could resemble Bianca.
She could wear a temporary tattoo.
And she had a father in Palermo positioned to send the hidden film.
Two sides?
Maybe Mara was helping and attacking?
We found her apartment.
Empty.
But not cleaned.
Inside were photographs of me.
Alessandro.
Il Cielo.
Caterina.
Bianca.
And Vittorio.
A wall connected them with black string.
At the center:
Isabella.
On the table was a letter.
My father told me to give Elena the score.
If she survived dessert, Moretti would finally look at the truth.
I stared.
Mara knew about the poisoning.
Her father knew.
They sent evidence.
But did Mara poison the cake?
Emma’s silver bird said yes.
Unless Emma had seen Mara elsewhere.
We found Arturo Vescari in Palermo through Italian authorities.
He gave a statement.
Mara was not his biological daughter.
She was Vittorio Rinaldi’s second daughter.
Rachel’s half-sister.
Another hidden child.
My head hurt.
Vittorio had planted children like evidence.
Mara hated him.
She had infiltrated Bianca’s studio to learn what happened to her mother, who died years earlier under suspicious circumstances.
When Mara discovered Bianca’s dessert plot, she tried to expose it.
She sent the score.
She also went to Il Cielo.
Why dressed like me?
Because she intended to switch the poisoned dessert before it reached Alessandro.
The woman Emma saw was not planting poison.
She was trying to remove it.
Then someone interrupted.
Bianca herself.
Two women.
Same disguise.
Same kitchen.
Emma saw only one part.
The little bottle?
Mara carried an antidote compound supplied by Sofia’s research lab.
The cook misunderstood.
Then Bianca arrived afterward and poisoned the soufflé.
That explained timing.
Confusion.
The tattoo.
A temporary mark Mara used to fool Bianca’s people.
Mara had been trying to save Alessandro.
Then vanished because Bianca realized it.
“Where is Mara now?”
I asked.
No one knew.
But one photograph in the apartment showed a stone building.
Family mausoleum.
Moretti Cemetery.
On the back:
JUNE 14.
I looked at Alessandro.
“Bianca isn’t planning another restaurant.”
“No.”
“She’s planning your funeral where your family buries its dead.”
May you like
Alessandro’s face hardened.
“And Mara knows how.”
