Chapter 3 - THE FIGHT THAT WAS NEVER FINISHED

The envelope contained photographs.
Old ones.
Some were faded.
Some were damaged.
But one photograph stopped Gabriel cold.
Ethan.
Standing inside an underground arena.
Across from him was a young Victor Hale.
Marcus stared.
"Victor fought your brother?"
Gabriel nodded.
"Yes."
Victor stood outside the dojo.
"You finally remember."
Gabriel looked at him.
"You lied."
Victor smiled.
"About what?"
"You told everyone Ethan lost control."
"He did."
"You pushed him."
Victor's smile disappeared.
"You don't know what happened."
"I was there."
"And you arrived after."
Gabriel stepped forward.
Victor lowered his voice.
"Your brother wanted to fight."
"You encouraged him."
"I offered him an opportunity."
"You offered him money."
Victor shrugged.
"He wanted money."
Gabriel's hands tightened.
Marcus noticed.
"Gabriel."
The old man breathed slowly.
Victor smiled.
"Still angry."
"No."
Gabriel looked at him.
"Finished."
Victor laughed.
"Then prove it."
He turned toward Marcus.
"One match."
Marcus frowned.
"With who?"
"Me."
Gabriel shook his head.
"No."
Marcus looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because he wants you angry."
Victor smiled.
"He's afraid."
Marcus took a step forward.
Gabriel stopped him.
"Not every fight deserves an answer."
Victor laughed.
"That's why you disappeared."
Gabriel looked at him.
"No."
"I know why you disappeared."
Victor's voice became colder.
"You were afraid of what you had become."
Gabriel said nothing.
Victor walked away.
Before entering the SUV, he looked back.
"Marcus."
Marcus turned.
"Forty seconds."
Victor smiled.
"That's how long your mentor lasted the last time he fought me."
Then he left.
Marcus stared at Gabriel.
"Is that true?"
Gabriel nodded.
"Yes."
"You lost?"
"Yes."
Marcus looked stunned.
"But you're better than him."
Gabriel shook his head.
"I wasn't."
"What happened?"
Gabriel sat down.
"I was angry."
He looked at Marcus.
"And angry fighters make mistakes."
Marcus remembered his own first fight.
The same mistake.
Gabriel continued.
"Victor knew my brother mattered to me."
"He used that."
"Yes."
"And Ethan?"
Gabriel lowered his eyes.
"He died because I couldn't accept losing."
Marcus sat beside him.
"What do we do now?"
Gabriel looked toward the parking lot.
"We don't fight Victor."
"Then what?"
"We expose him."
Victor had spent years building his reputation.
But Gabriel knew something else.
Victor's private tournaments weren't merely competitions.
They were designed to manipulate fighters.
Pressure them.
Push them into reckless decisions.
And profit from the spectacle.
Gabriel and Marcus began collecting evidence.
Former fighters came forward.
One after another.
Stories emerged.
Broken contracts.
Hidden injuries.
Illegal betting.
Manipulated matches.
Victor had built an empire on humiliation.
Marcus became the unexpected face of the investigation.
He had once wanted to defeat Victor.
Now he wanted to stop him.
But Victor struck first.
At the next major martial arts event, Victor released a video.
It showed Marcus's old fight with Gabriel.
Edited.
Manipulated.
Made to look like Gabriel had brutally dominated him.
The internet exploded.
People mocked Marcus.
Some called Gabriel a fraud.
Others demanded another match.
Victor announced:
GABRIEL STONE VS. MARCUS REED — THE FINAL LESSON.
The public loved it.
Gabriel hated it.
Marcus looked at the announcement.
"We can refuse."
Gabriel shook his head.
"No."
Marcus stared.
"You said we wouldn't fight him."
"We won't."
"Then who?"
Gabriel looked at him.
"You."
Marcus froze.
"Me?"
"Not against Victor."
"Then?"
"Against yourself."
Gabriel handed him the black belt.
Marcus looked at it.
"You want me to fight?"
"No."
Gabriel pointed toward the arena.
"I want you to stand there and refuse to become what they want you to become."
The night of the event arrived.
Thousands watched.
Victor stood beside the ring.
Marcus entered.
The crowd booed.
Victor smiled.
"Where's the old man?"
Marcus looked toward the entrance.
Gabriel walked in.
Still wearing the same faded work shirt.
Still carrying the same quiet expression.
The crowd laughed.
Victor shouted,
"Get on the mat!"
Gabriel shook his head.
"No."
Victor frowned.
Marcus understood.
Gabriel had never come to fight.
He had come to expose the truth.
A giant screen behind them suddenly changed.
Documents appeared.
Bank records.
Contracts.
Medical reports.
Messages.
Names.
Dates.
Victor's face turned pale.
Marcus looked at the crowd.
"You're watching the wrong fight."
The audience fell silent.
Marcus continued.
"The real fight isn't between two men."
He pointed toward Victor.
"It's between truth and the story he sold you."
Victor shouted,
"Turn it off!"
The screen continued.
The evidence was already being streamed online.
Former fighters began appearing backstage.
One after another.
They told their stories.
Victor's empire collapsed in real time.
Police entered the building.
Victor tried to escape.
Gabriel stopped him.
Not with violence.
With a single sentence.
"You spent twenty-seven years teaching people that winning was everything."
Victor stared at him.
Gabriel continued.
"Tonight, you finally learned what losing means."
Victor was arrested.
But the story wasn't over.
May you like
Because Gabriel still had one final lesson for Marcus.
And it would begin the next morning.
