PART 1: A Question That Changed Everything

The room froze.

Hannah’s tiny voice lingered in the air like a wound no one could see.

“Are we going back outside tonight?”

Lucas stared at her.

For years, he had negotiated billion-dollar contracts without hesitation. He had stood before investors, politicians, and business rivals without fear.

Yet nothing had ever left him speechless the way those six words did.

The little girl wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t begging.

She was simply asking what she believed was the most likely outcome.

Because disappointment had become normal.

Lucas slowly stood from his chair.

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

Firm.

Certain.

Final.

All four girls looked up.

“No,” Lucas repeated. “You are not going back outside tonight.”

Rose blinked.

Emma seemed confused.

Lily lowered her spoon.

Even Hannah looked uncertain, as if she didn’t quite understand.

Lucas crouched beside her.

“You’ll sleep somewhere warm tonight.”

The child swallowed.

“Tomorrow too?”

Lucas felt his throat tighten.

“Yes.”

“And after that?”

The question struck even deeper.

Because children who had been abandoned learned to think ahead.

They knew promises often expired overnight.

Lucas looked at Daniel.

Then back at the girls.

“As long as you need.”

For the first time, Hannah smiled.

It was small.

Fragile.

But it was enough to break something open inside Lucas Bennett forever.

That night, instead of returning to his empty penthouse, Lucas canceled every meeting on his schedule.

The four girls slept in guest rooms inside his estate.

For the first time in months, they slept in clean beds.

No cold sidewalks.

No fear.

No hunger.

No wondering if they would survive until morning.

And while the girls slept peacefully upstairs, Lucas sat alone in his study.

Looking at old photographs.

Photographs of a little boy who had once been abandoned himself.

A little boy he had spent decades trying to forget.

Until four girls walked back into his life and forced him to remember.
