Trump Ally Promises CNN Overhaul If Paramount Succeeds in Warner Bros. Takeover

Tech billionaire Larry Ellison and his son David Ellison are reportedly playing a pivotal role in a major corporate and political battle that could reshape the U.S. media industry—and possibly determine the future direction of CNN.

People familiar with the discussions say the Ellisons have privately indicated to President Donald Trump that if their company Paramount Global succeeds in its $108 billion takeover bid for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), significant changes would be made to CNN. Trump has long criticized the network, frequently referring to it as “fake news.”

The aggressive bid from Paramount surfaced only days after Netflix reached a $72 billion agreement to acquire several of Warner’s entertainment assets, including its film studios and HBO. Notably, the Netflix proposal does not include CNN, which would instead become a separate entity under that plan.

Paramount’s proposal, however, takes the opposite approach. Their offer includes CNN directly, and the Ellisons have reportedly made it clear they intend to rebuild the network if the deal is successful.

According to The Wall Street Journal, during private meetings in Washington, David Ellison told senior officials linked to the Trump administration that CNN could undergo a sweeping transformation under Paramount leadership. The changes could involve a major shift in both the network’s culture and editorial direction.

Reports also suggest that Larry Ellison, the co-founder of Oracle, discussed the possibility of replacing several well-known CNN anchors, including Erin Burnett and Brianna Keilar, two figures who have been frequent targets of criticism from Trump.

One White House official reportedly said the president believes CNN needs new ownership and major programming adjustments, arguing that the current leadership has been openly antagonistic toward him.

Observers say the Ellisons have been working to strengthen their relationship with Trump, particularly because the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division—which ultimately answers to the president—will have a decisive role in approving or blocking either merger proposal. The father and son were recently seen seated with Trump in the presidential box during the Kennedy Center Honors, just two days before Paramount revealed its counteroffer.

The Guardian reported that Larry Ellison personally contacted Trump after the Netflix–Warner deal was announced, arguing that allowing Netflix to acquire the assets could give Silicon Valley overwhelming influence over the streaming industry, potentially limiting competition.
