DOJ Indicts 14 Members Of ‘Extensive’ Migrant Smuggling Operation

DOJ Charges 14 in Major Migrant Smuggling Scheme; Eight Taken Into Custody

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced charges against 14 individuals accused of participating in what officials describe as an “extensive alien smuggling organization.” Authorities confirmed that eight of the defendants have been arrested for their alleged roles in smuggling hundreds of undocumented migrants into the United States.

A federal grand jury in Las Cruces, New Mexico, returned the indictment, charging the suspects with conspiracy to bring, transport, and harbor undocumented individuals within the country. According to a DOJ press release, the smuggling network allegedly operated from Mexico and facilitated illegal crossings through the southern border, particularly in New Mexico and South Texas.

Allegations of a Sophisticated and Dangerous Operation

Supervisory Official Antoinette T. Bacon of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division stated that the indictment outlines a complex conspiracy that placed migrants in significant danger.

“Today’s indictment alleges that the defendants engaged in a sophisticated conspiracy to smuggle aliens into and throughout the United States at great danger to the aliens, resulting in the death of one person,” Bacon said.

She noted that the DOJ collaborated closely with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to dismantle the Mexico-based organization, which allegedly smuggled hundreds of migrants, including unaccompanied minors.

“We are committed to eliminating transnational alien smuggling organizations that exploit migrants purely for profit and undermine our national security,” Bacon added.

Use of Stash Houses and Evasion of Law Enforcement

According to the indictment, the defendants allegedly coordinated the unlawful entry of migrants from Mexico and arranged their transportation within the United States. Many were reportedly hidden in so-called “stash houses” along the smuggling routes.

Prosecutors further allege that members of the organization attempted to evade law enforcement by driving at high speeds and instructing migrants on how to escape U.S. Border Patrol agents and bypass immigration checkpoints.
